Are you looking for a new challenge at a busy law firm? If so then we may have your next role.

We are currently looking for a secretary to work in our busy crime department at our head office in Gateshead, just two minutes walk from Gateshead Metro. Tasks include but are not limited to the typing, costing of criminal legal aid files and providing support to the partners of the firm.

You must have prior experience working as a criminal secretary at another similar firm as being able to hit the ground running is a must. Experience using Proclaim case management software is advantageous also.

Applicants with no experience within criminal law will not be considered.

We would ideally like someone who is available to start at 8am however the hours are negotiable and part time applicants / half-day working will also be considered. Submit your CV today and we will respond once we have reviewed it.


Type correspondence and other work ensuring at all times that deadlines are met and the high quality standards required by the firm are met.

Ensure filing systems and other information/reference systems are maintained to the firms standards ensuring quick and easy retrieval of documents/information.

Liase with the junior secretary in planning the workload of the partners to anticipate and balance their priorities taking in to account time and optimising output.

Assist with the maintenance of the database essential to the smooth running of the firm ensuring quick and easy retrieval of documents.

Ensure all mail received is distributed and dispatched carefully and quickly and that confidentiality is maintained.

Schedule appointments, screen telephone calls answering questions and giving information courteously and expeditiously to all callers and visitors promoting a favourable image for the firm.

Undertake appropriate training to enable you to effectively use any of the technology currently used by or subsequently introduced in to the firm.

Calculate bills of costs relating to Legally aided clients within the guidelines laid down by the Legal Aid Agency.

Liaise with the Accounts Department regarding the payment of disbursements, outstanding accounts etc.

On a daily basis, liaise with relevant support staff with regard to any Court duties required of other Fee Earners.

Contribute to the smooth running of the firm by assisting other support staff with their work during periods of peak demand thus optimising output.

Act as a systems supervisor for the firms IT system.
